iPhone SE Stands for 'Special Edition', Confirms Apple

Soon after Apple on Monday unveiled its latest 4-inch iPhone dubbed iPhone SE, one of the biggest questions people had was what does the SE stands for? Apple on Monday during the keynote never talked about the naming of the new iPhone but Twitter was all buzz with people guessing the name. Some of the Twitter users believed SE to stand for 'Standard Edition' while some even took digs at Apple with tweets saying SE stood for 'Still Expensive'.

The Cupertino-based giant has put an end to the speculations by confirming that in iPhone SE, the 'SE' stands for 'Special Edition', a name that had been rumoured since early this year. Apple's Philip Schiller, Senior Vice President of Marketing, confirmed the naming to Jason Cipriani of FortuneTech.

Apple on Monday also announced that the iPhone SE will be available in India at a starting price of Rs. 39,000. As for availability, Apple said the iPhone SE will be available for purchase in India starting early April.

To refresh, the iPhone SE sports a 4-inch display and comes in two storage variants: 16GB and 64GB. It has much the same innards as the iPhone 6s. The new Apple smartphone is meant to address both the demand for a smaller screen iPhone, as well as the demand for a cheap iPhone. Looking nearly identical to the iPhone 5s, the iPhone SE comes with the colour variants introduced with the iPhone 6s - including Rose Gold.

For specifications, the iPhone SE features the iPhone 6s' Apple A9 SoC and M9 motion coprocessor, 12-megapixel iSight (rear) camera with 4K video support, Bluetooth 4.2, improved Wi-Fi and LTE, new microphones, and Apple Pay support with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
