Separately, Andy Rubin's Essential Phone has also reportedly received the January update alongside.
The January 2019 Android update for the Pixel family brings along only one functional fix, albeit a very important one. Many users on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have been reporting of low-quality audio issuewhile recording video, and this issue has finally been fixed with the latest January security patch update. Apart from this fix, the January security patch also brings important fixes to bugs and vulnerabilities; hence all users are advised to install the update.
Unlike previous releases, the original Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones haven't been left out in the first batch of rollouts. Instead, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P images haven't been released. The two phones have reached their end-limit for promised software support, and this could mean that Google has finally stopped rolling out security patches for all Nexus devices moving forward in 2019.
According to Android Police, the Essential Phone is also receiving the latest January update alongside the Pixel devices. It is reported to be 52.2MB in size, and comes with 27 security fixes. The report says that this prompt software rollout refutes claims of recent reports speculating the discontinuation of the Essential Phone.
How to download January 2019 Android security update
You can check the availability of the January 2019 Android security update on your eligible Pixel phone by going to Settings > System updates. You can install the factory images to flash your devices with the latest update. This deletes all data on the smartphone. Therefore, you need to back up your data first.
