Cyanogen Says Yu Partnership Intact; Yutopia to Run Cyanogen OS 12.1

Soon after Yu Yureka Plus and Yuphoria smartphones went on sale in India running stock Android OS instead of Android Lollipop-based Cyanogen OS 12 custom ROM, speculations about the end of partnership between Cyanogen and Yu Televentures were rampant. Yu last month had also launched its Yu Yunique smartphone in India running on stock Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box.

Cyanogen however has come out defending its partnership in India and has even confirmed that Yu's upcoming flagship, Yutopia, will be running Cyanogen OS 12.1.

Cyanogen in a statement to Android Police regarding the partnership with Yu said, "We have a great partnership with Yu, and happy to announce that Cyanogen OS 12.1 will be powering Yu's upcoming flagship - Yutopia."

The company also confirmed that the Cyanogen OS 12.1 update will be rolling out to Yu Yureka and Yureka Plus smartphones soon.

Explaining the usage of stock Android instead of Cyanogen OS on the two smartphones from Yu, Cyanogen said, "It doesn't always makes sense for us to support every device in a partner's portfolio, and there are one-off model variations. We want to put the unfounded rumours to rest."

Recently, Yu Televentures' Founder Rahul Sharma on a Twitter confirmed the name for the upcoming flagship, Yu Yutopia, and referred to it as the "most powerful phone on the planet".

To recall, Cyanogen back in April parted ways with OnePlus after months of rough weather in their relationship. At that time, Cyanogen suggested that it was looking to work with new Chinese vendors to make its commercial custom Android ROM for OEMs - Cyanogen OS - reach more consumers.

Cyanogen had announced a partnership with Micromax's subsidiary, Yu, late last year which gave the company rights to be Cyanogen's exclusive partner in India.
